What is a SAP Assessment?
The SAP assessment, a necessary component of aiding those who have violated DOT drug and alcohol regulations, is a face-to-face evaluation with a Substance Abuse Professional. The purpose of this assessment is to determine the level of assistance an individual needs to work toward a healthy, positive recovery. The evaluation isn’t intended to be punitive. Rather, the main goal is to identify areas of concern that may lie beneath an individual’s substance use and to empower them with tools and strategies to address these underlying issues.
Following the initial assessment, the SAP holds the responsibility of prescribing a course of action catered to the individual’s needs. This may include, but isn’t limited to, educational programs, treatment programs, follow-up testing, and continued aftercare. The emphasis is always on understanding the unique circumstances and resources required to support an individual's journey to sobriety and wellness.

When would I need an SAP Assessment?
In the context of the Department Of Transport, an SAP assessment becomes necessary when individuals violate DOT drug and alcohol rules, such as failing or refusing a DOT drug or alcohol test. Notably, the regulation applies to all DOT employees who perform safety-sensitive duties, including pilots, bus drivers, and train operators.
An SAP assessment may also be necessary in other professional and personal circumstances. This may include court-ordered mandates due to drug or alcohol-related offenses or incidents such as a DUI (Driving Under the Influence) or DWI (Driving While Intoxicated), intervention by an employer concerned for the well-being of an employee, or voluntarily, by individuals motivated to address their substance abuse issues.
